The Student Emergency Fund reminds us of the importance of lending a helping hand to students in need.
The fund was established by alumni Terry Tsang and Terence Tsang in 2015 with a contribution of HK$2 million. Their dedication to helping students in financial distress dates back to their time as undergraduates at HKUST when they suffered one of the most devastating events in any person's life: the passing of their father. They faced immediate financial hardship and struggled to pay their tuition, as their father was the sole source of family income. Thankfully the Student Affairs Office was able to allocate emergency funds to their family as they navigated personal tragedy.

The student emergency fund is available to both local and non-local students, in the spirit of global citizenship. It provides financial assistance to HKUST students facing unforeseen financial emergencies that may disrupt their studies.
“The aid from AEF showed me that
I was not alone.”
“The AEF aid was received just in time,
lifted the weight off my shoulder.”
“The AEF has allowed me to pay for the
residence expenses. It has been a great
relief to me.”
The cumulative donations received from alumni are treated as the principal balance of the Alumni Endowment Fund (AEF), and is maintained in perpetuity. The principal is the basis of sustained annual income from various investments forming a reliable and viable source of support for many beneficial projects for students.
